Therapy and Counselling in Hong Kong

For couples, teenagers, and adults working through something hard

Max Hogan, counsellor in Hong Kong, in his Central office

Nothing here is an emergency. That is usually why it never gets dealt with.

Maybe it's your relationship. The same argument on a loop, or a silence that has gone on so long it feels normal.

Maybe it's your teenager. Withdrawn, angry, or struggling in a way the school reports don't explain.

Maybe it's you. A version of your life that looks right from the outside and doesn't fit from the inside.

None of that is a crisis, and none of it is going to fix itself. You don't have to be falling apart to be worth an hour of proper attention.

Therapy and Counselling Services in Hong Kong

Couples Therapy and Marriage Counselling

When connection fades it doesn't mean love has gone. It means something stopped getting attention.

I use the Gottman Method to contain the fighting, and emotionally focused work to get at what the fighting is actually about. Married, unmarried, same-sex, cross-cultural. All of it.

Teen Therapy and Family Counselling

Teenagers in Hong Kong carry academic pressure, shifting identity, and a friendship group that reshuffles every June.

I work with teens directly and with parents alongside, including families supporting a neurodivergent teenager after a diagnosis. Support and counselling, not assessment.

Individual Therapy and Counselling

One-to-one work with adults on anxiety, depression, burnout, grief, identity, and the particular disorientation of building a life somewhere from scratch.

Direct, warm, grounded. In person in Central or online.

Men's Mental Health

Most men were never taught how to say what is actually going on, and the ones who need this most are usually the ones who got sent rather than the ones who booked.

I'm direct, I won't waste your time, and I'm not going to ask how that makes you feel for fifty minutes.

How I Work

Most counselling websites say the approach is integrative and leave it there. Here is what mine actually rests on.

You were shaped by what surrounded you, and that can change

Nobody becomes who they are on their own. The household you grew up in, the people you spend your time with, and the pressure you're under all leave marks.

That isn't an excuse. It's usually the first honest look at why something that makes no sense keeps happening anyway.

Whatever you keep doing is doing something for you

People are not irrational. If a habit, a reaction, or a way of handling conflict has survived for fifteen years, it is protecting something or paying you something.

I'm more interested in working out what that is than in telling you to stop.

People change in relationships, not in isolation

You can read every book about it and still not shift. What tends to work is being properly known by someone who isn't going anywhere.

That's why the fit between us matters more than any technique I use, and why you should feel free to talk to three counsellors before picking one.

What happened to you is fixed. What it means is not

We all carry stories about who we are and what's possible. Some of them were written by people who did not have our best interests at heart.

You can't change the events. The story you tell about them is yours to write, and that is where most of the freedom actually is.

You won't be talked out of your reasons, and you won't be left where you are

I'm not going to push you toward a change you haven't chosen. I'm also not going to let therapy become a warm hour that goes nowhere.

We'll set goals specific enough to know whether we're getting there, and we'll look at the progress together.

Different problems need different work

Some things you know how to fix and can't execute. Some things you execute fine while the meaning crushes you. Some things are older than any skill can reach.

Those need three very different kinds of work, and working out which one you've brought me is the first real thing I do. More on how that works →

What I draw on

Narrative therapy is my primary way of working. Around it, I use person-centered and humanistic practice, attachment and emotionally focused therapy, the Gottman Method with couples, cognitive-behavioral (CBT) and solution-focused tools where something concrete needs to change, motivational interviewing where someone is genuinely torn, and systemic work when the problem lives in the family rather than the person.

I don't think any one model holds the whole truth about a person. Treating one as if it did would be its own kind of problem.

Hi, I’m Max.

I'm a counsellor in Hong Kong. I work with couples, teenagers and adults who are ready to stop going through the motions and start building something that fits.

I spent a decade building something that looked right and felt wrong. Before this I was in biotech and business, so I know the pressure of high performance and what it costs, and I know expat life and its particular brand of isolation.

Therapy with me is direct. I'm not going to nod along and say nothing. I'll meet you where you are and help you work out what is actually going on.

What This Costs

Individual and teen sessions are HKD 1,200. Couples are HKD 1,550 for 75 minutes or HKD 1,800 for 90. I publish them because you should know before you call.

Most people start weekly, which is around HKD 4,800 a month, then move to fortnightly once things are steadier, which halves it.

Nothing is prepaid and nothing is packaged. Around session four we stop and review whether this is working, and if it isn't I'd rather tell you and help you find someone better suited.

I also hold a small number of reduced-fee places at HKD 800. No application and no proof of income. Mention it on the call.

Start with a free 20-minute call

No cost, no obligation, and no pressure to book anything afterwards. We talk about what's going on, what you want to be different, and whether I'm the right person for it.

If I'm not, I'll tell you and point you toward someone who is.
